Remembering Dan Tomberlin

The Dahlonega Arts community lost one of its champions this week in Dan Tomberlin. A US Air Force veteran and lifelong hippie by his own admission, Dan was well known for his love of life and wry wit as well as his considerable talent in watercolors and pencil illustrations. His colorful designs graced the walls of several local galleries—including the Bleu Gallery on the Dahlonega Square. Always supportive of his friends in the local community, Dan was an active member of the Dahlonega Arts Alliance and Chestatee Artists.

His impact will especially be missed during the DAA’s annual presentation of the Gold Brick Award during its yearly Holiday Social. During the first presentation of the Gold Brick Award — an award to commend members on their service to the organization — Dan announced that in the military a “gold brick” is usually a term for someone who is effectively useless. The laughter that rang out at that moment and the laughter the anecdote continues to inspire is a testament to Dan’s legacy of bringing happiness to others. We hold his loving wife, Pat, in our hearts during this time.
